The result was that my story is to continue to create art with a purpose of giving to charitable causes. So far I was able to participate in a fundraising event at St Thomas the Apostle Church in Naperville. The 2 day art fair allowed me to share 20 percent of my earnings in art sales toward a Haiti mission of education. This could not have come at a better time since the most recent hurricane damage. My second opportunity in less than a month is this weekend's silent auction in which I have actually donated 6 pieces toward raisng funds for a local food bank. Having worked in a senior services capacity during the last 9 years, fighting hunger and homelessness are dear to my heart. This is one of my donations to the silent auction happening tonight at If These Walls Could Talk gallery in Aurora Illinois. Most bidding will start at $25. I hope through my efforts of creating art someone will benefit.
So much has happened and I never seemed to have enough time to record the art related events, successes etc.

I have finally just retired and am committed to focusing on my art making and art learning and reconnecting with my creativity.

So I will begin by saying that I really am committed to making art that can be used to support a cause that I am passionate about. In particular, I support the Greater Illinois Chapter of Alzheimers Association. Every year for the last 5 years I have participated in Unforgettable ART, live paint event with 40 other artists with a live auction aat the end of 7 hours of painting.

Whenever an opportunity comes up to create art for causes such as this or food pantry fundraisers, I participate.

I continue to be a member (and Vice President) of the Midwest Collage Society and exhibit with the group whenever possible.

This piece called RADIANCE is currently on exhibit at the Wasco Nursery and Garden Center in St Charles, Illinois.
It is an event that is exciting, frightening, challenging and in the end gratifying when your art is sold and you are instrumental in helping raise money for Alzheimers research.

My painting was starting off very poorly in several shades of green, then flora was added. However, my heart wasn't in painting a floral. I felt depressed briefly. How was I to transform the hideous green monster to something that would be pleasing to the eye. I really wanted to paint an abstract.

The deciding moment came when I opted to white wash the whole thing using a rectangular sponge (not a paint brush) and some Titanium Buff. It allowed me to use physical energy to obliterate the green mess. The wash allowed some of the base to come through and suddently I could feel that there was potential in the painting. I risked a little but using some gold paint and before I knew it, the composition was coming along and was much more pleasing to me and even ro some observers who were walking around. There is nothing like a compliment to give you courage to keep at it.

The end result was a piece I could feel at least somewhat proud of.
Lately I have been working small. The bottom piece is currently in a show at the Union Street Gallery. The whole show is works on small scale, less than 12 X 12. Small works can make a big impact. It surprised me. I keep trying to push myself to painting larger and larger and yet my focus has always been working small. Perhaps it is because I thing it is risky to work large?? Time to rethink that limiting idea.

So, in addition to my art cards I am building a series of small pieces and am thinking of my next show in 2015. Each year I exhibit at the Addison Art Guild shows and all of the Midwest Collage Society Shows. I currently have 2 collage paintings at Orchard Church on display. Next month I hope to participate in the Earth Day Artifacts Show at the Culturestock book store in Aurora, Illinois. It takes quite a bit of coordinating, documenting and photographing to be ready when the opportunity presents itself. My collage painting, Mystery Mandala won an award last fall and is currently at the Orchard Community Church.
I am also staining some papers to create unique shades of green. I will be putting together some art cards for St Patricks Day. It is always a challenge to come up with a new design. Yet, it is a meditation. I focus on the task of combining, sorting and forget everything else.
Looking through the stash of hand made papers and other ephemera I delight in placing afew together. When I am pleased with an arrangement, I glue it together and voila, I have a card. One of a kind. Original and made in USA.
I am most grateful for my facebook friends who saw my work and loved it enough to purchase a few. Thank you and wishing all a Happy Valentine's Day. Be blessed with LOVE.
This mixed media collage was created from an assortment of items included in a brown bag during the annual Midwest Collage Society retreat in Milford, Indiana ( Sept 19-23,20120). One of our traditions is to provide each participant with a brown bag of miscellaneous items and they create a work of collage art. The items I chose from my brown bag were: a variety of papers, bamboo sticks, a gingko leaf ( a favorite of mine), some gold foil paper and a I added a little seed I had found on the beach in Florida several years ago. I am always amazed how unique and different each artist's project turns out. The rules for this challenge are: use what you like and add anything of your own.Taniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15763651668272054635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33712364.post-42963079731641397632012-01-10T19:48:00.000-08:002012-01-10T19:56:05.610-08:00Bits and Pieces<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 140px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4c0IP3C2sg8/Tw0IUIp5dMI/AAAAAAAAAl4/DQbZO1bdUI0/s200/DSC_0502.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696218245707166914" />
Every collage artist hoards bits and pieces of paper, scraps, findings with the hope that some day the moment will reveal itself when it can be used in a collage. During a recent retreat of 18 collage artists I sorted through mounds of bits and pieces and completed 30 individual art cards such as this one. Sometimes it could take weeks before the right assortment of these pieces come together for a pleasing composition. My good friend Maureen Gasek encouraged me to participate. I am glad I did. I needed a challenge like that. My painting was auctioned off for the highest amount. It was a mandala inspired mixed media and collage painting. While creating this piece there were some moments of angst. Would the painting be successful by the time the cocktail party began? The weather was fantastic this weekend.Taniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15763651668272054635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33712364.post-16925410670637015792010-08-22T09:11:00.000-07:002010-08-22T09:19:19.538-07:00Milwaukee Art Museum<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUrzr493PgI/THFN_zWuGKI/AAAAAAAAAkk/I0LFsY7ESlQ/s200/DSC_0003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508269577763428514" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KUrzr493PgI/THFNwgueVwI/AAAAAAAAAkc/QDCjx6sKsg8/s200/DSC_0005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508269315064747778" />
Yesterday we travelled to Milwaukee to visit friends. Dave and Mary were fantastic hosts. They took us to the art museum where we saw an historic quilt, then we viewed more than 100 of the most incredible prints of Warriington Colescott. He is a Wisconsin based printmaker, who has trained his brilliant artist eye on the fashions and foibles of human behavior since the 1940's. Using multiple ways of creating prints he absolutely blew me away with his skill as a printmaker. Having briefly studied printmaking (etching, dry point and screenprinting) I could really appreciate his skill.Taniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15763651668272054635noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33712364.post-77002516732378322562010-08-22T08:28:00.001-07:002010-08-22T08:30:45.512-07:00My Canadian Art Friends<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 136px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUrzr493PgI/THFCmnqJ2XI/AAAAAAAAAkU/ac2aCimRhD0/s200/DSC_0248_2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508257050499078514" />Taniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15763651668272054635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33712364.post-55452200495190733932010-08-22T08:03:00.001-07:002010-08-22T08:23:11.744-07:00Abstract Play<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 185px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUrzr493PgI/THE-41n4aCI/AAAAAAAAAkM/LX4UxSvL-RY/s200/DSC_0256.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508252965438777378" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 167px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUrzr493PgI/THE86XD61YI/AAAAAAAAAkE/fq2x8QX6Ir4/s200/DSC_0255.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508250792571360642" />Recently I took a vacation to Lake Winnipeg to stay with our dear friends Karen and Gord. It was a much needed rest but the best part was that we dedicated a whole day to art making. Mary, Karen and I visited Karen's sister a retired art teacher and we spent the day in her studio being artists. I just played with my acrylic paints. The first was done on canvas the second was done on acrylic paper. As I Iook at these little vignettes I feel pure joy. No specific intentions or goals with these two playful pieces. I am still thinking that more will be added to them to become a more complex piece. But at the moment I have them in my studio to remind me of the great vacation week in Manitoba Canada.Taniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15763651668272054635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33712364.post-482007447973156142010-07-12T19:20:00.000-07:002010-07-12T19:28:04.950-07:00The Latest Exhibit of the Midwest Collage SocietyThis weekend The Midwest Collage Society hosted a reception at the Paper, Process and Perception Exhibit at the Norris Cultural Center in St. Charles Illinois. The turnout was good and we had a spectacular table of refreshments. This is an especially wonderful venue with two floors of wall space to hang art on. I have four collages and am honored to have my piece, Remembering Mandala on the postcard that went out to patrons and friends. I was delighted to see my friends, the Craigheads, Julia Thomas ( a patron), fellow art tribe members, Maureen and Cheryl.

This weekend I also attended a memorial service for a dear fellow artist and friend, Nancy Ahlstrom who passed away at 79 from cancer. She was a stylish, friendly, remarkably likable and talented artist and will be sorely missed by many. May she rest in peace.

And now I venture back into the studio to test out some new acrylic painting techniques that I will incorporate with my collage work. I am also working on some art journaling just for fun.Taniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15763651668272054635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33712364.post-13545490778475880262010-06-25T05:13:00.000-07:002010-06-25T05:14:57.299-07:00<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 143px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KUrzr493PgI/TCSdi8tICdI/AAAAAAAAAj8/vC7SwgFb7zg/s200/yoga4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486683469780617682" />Taniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15763651668272054635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33712364.post-39752298210300059382010-06-25T05:12:00.000-07:002010-06-25T05:15:40.270-07:00<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 132px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KUrzr493PgI/TCSdXVj-BbI/AAAAAAAAAj0/3skU4KqqfCE/s200/tulips22010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486683270294668722" />Taniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15763651668272054635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33712364.post-32794251139421273262010-06-25T05:08:00.000-07:002010-06-27T15:55:05.113-07:00My heart soars when I am surrounded<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 128px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUrzr493PgI/TCSdKhf2xBI/AAAAAAAAAjs/VV16ZaK89qs/s200/tulip2010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486683050160342034" />
My heart soars when I am surrounded by my art supplies, inspirations, books, pieces of collage materials. I have made it a goal to get into the studio daily. I depleted my inventory of cards so I have been recycling old watercolors into new collage cards. The studio is so full of possibilities. These 4X6 cards represent an opportunity to experiment, with no fear of investing too much time and the feeling of completion at the end is healing to the soul who has been crying out for time to create.Taniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15763651668272054635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33712364.post-9461409326669798712010-06-23T05:08:00.000-07:002010-06-23T05:13:25.137-07:00The StudioDuring the last few months I have not been active in my studio with creating because I was very much occupied with preparing, organizing and putting out fires for the wedding of my daughter Victoria. During the first week of June the studio also became a dormitory for visiting young people as they slept in blow up mattresses and sleeping bags. There were 5 in a section of the studio. Yet, my brother's partner, Michelle came to the wedding from Philadelphia and insisted on seeing the studio so as artist to artist I allowed her to enter my private space which I don't easily share with others unless I know that they will not judge me on my chaotic ways. Here is her review of my studio.
"The moment I entered Tania Blanco's studio I felt the powerful pull of a woman who congers magic out of chaos. Everywhere I looked in the studio there were projects in motion, surrounded by myriads of textures and colors, a tantalizing alchemy of gold and silver shimmering through oceans of visual vignettes, tattooed by a calligraphy of organic symbols and rhythms. I was dazzled by Tania's ability to reach in to this treasure trove of the human spirit and weave her consciousness into a harmonious tapestry of radiant transcendence. In her collage workshops which were set up on large tables in the studio she has the rare gift of inspiring other women in the ways and rituals of releasing their own powers of creative expression. Tania Blanco is an artist who understands the universal and archetypal temple of her soul and choreographs for us with the force of her vibrant heat, the dance of her visual poetry, that continues to inspire us all with the wise and wonderful woman that she is."Taniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15763651668272054635noreply@blogger.com1
